This October we’d like to encourage all our patients to make the month one of positive change. Stoptober and Sober October are initiatives that are inspiring people across the UK to take the first step towards a healthier lifestyle.
Stoptober encourages people to give up smoking for 28 days. While Sober October, launched by Macmillan Cancer Support, challenges participants to give up alcohol for a month while raising money for charity in the process.
It’s commonly known that both smoking and drinking have serious effects not only on the body, but on oral health and both these challenges promote better overall health and well being. One of the most concerning issues associated with smoking and drinking is the risk of oral cancer, cases of which have increased 38% in the past decade. The timing of these challenges is particularly apt, as Mouth Cancer Action Month is also just around the corner in November.
Smoking and drinking often go hand in hand, which can make it harder to give up one without the other. But if you’re ready to make a positive change this October, here are three powerful ways quitting can give you something to smile about.
1. Big Savings
Did you know the average UK household spends around £77 per month on alcohol? And for smokers, the costs are even more staggering – averaging £444 a month.
Taking just 28 days off can leave you with hundreds of pounds in savings. Imagine what you could do with that extra cash?
2. A Brighter, More Confident Smile
Research shows that people who smile regularly are often seen as more confident, approachable, and even more likely to succeed at work. But smoking and drinking both take their toll on the appearance of teeth, leaving many feeling too self-conscious to smile:
- Staining: Nicotine, tar, and dark drinks like red wine can discolour teeth.
- Decay & erosion: Alcohol is acidic and sugary, wearing down enamel and increasing the risk of cavities.
- Bad breath: Dehydration from alcohol or smoking dries out the mouth, leading to odour and discomfort.
By cutting back, you’re protecting your teeth, keeping your breath fresh, and giving yourself more reason to smile in public!
3. Lower Risk of Serious Health Problems
Oral health isn’t just about your teeth, it’s also closely linked to your overall wellbeing. A recent article from the BBC reported that bacteria in the mouth has been connected to cognitive decline as we age.
Furthermore, studies in mice have shown a potential connection between the bacteria that causes gum disease and Alzheimer’s. The Alzheimer’s Association recommends keeping up good oral hygiene to reduce these risks.
Smoking and drinking both increase the chance of gum disease, and our blog post ‘Why A Happy Mouth Is A Happy Body’ explored the emerging evidence that gum disease bacteria is linked to heart disease, lung disease, and diabetes.
By cutting back on these habits, you’re protecting your teeth, gums, and wider bodily health. It’s a simple lifestyle change that gives you peace of mind and long-term benefits.
